Baptist Health System and CentroMed, a San Antonio-based Federally Qualified Health Center, announced that they have signed an agreement to develop a new primary care clinic on San Antonio's South Side. The clinic will provide a broad spectrum of health care services to include primary care, obstetrics and dental care among others.

The new clinic will provide a medical home for people who need primary care to help manage chronic medical issues and will also help improve overall health on the South Side by providing preventative care.

People in medically underserved areas often rely on hospital emergency rooms for medical issues that could be taken care of by a primary care physician. The new CentroMed clinic will provide a new access point for nearby residents who do not have ready access to primary health care. The clinic has the potential to avoid expensive and unnecessary trips to the emergency room for people who don't have an urgent need.

The new CentroMed clinic will be located at 3127 S.E. Military next to the Home Depot. Initial plans are for the clinic to be home to three primary care providers, with the addition of two obstetricians/gynecologists in the year after the clinic opens. Clinic staff will help qualify uninsured patients with Medicaid, Medicare, CHIP, and CareLink services.
