Celebrate World Breastfeeding Week

World Breastfeeding Week is August 1-7, 2008.

World Breastfeeding Week 2008 calls for greater support for mothers in achieving the gold standard of infant feeding: breastfeeding exclusively for six months, and providing appropriate complementary foods with continued breastfeeding for up to two years or beyond.

Mothers' milk is widely acknowledged to be a complete source of nutrition for infants, benefiting growth, development, immune systems, and overall health. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends breastfeeding exclusively for the first six months of infancy to support optimal growth and brain development.

If you are currently breastfeeding, good for you! You should feel proud to know that you are doing the best thing for both your baby and yourself. If you know someone who is breastfeeding, take a moment this week to remind her what a great job she's doing. Breastfeeding moms need all the support and encouragement they can get.
