When minutes matter.

Baptist provides the best in heart care, close to home. Accreditation distinguishes our Chest Pain Centers from other facilities. Accreditation means we employ rapid diagnosis and treatment of chest pain, assessment of patients, and ensure staff training and competency. The designation by the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care establishes our hospitals as leaders in cardiovascular care in San Antonio and South Texas.

Accreditation is a process aimed at ensuring patients receive the highest quality of chest pain care. The SCPC’s goal is to significantly reduce the mortality rate of heart attack patients by reducing the time it takes to receive treatment and increasing the accuracy and effectiveness of treatment.

All of Baptist’s Chest Pain Centers have demonstrated expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and completing on-site evaluations by a review team from the SCPC.

Accredited Chest Pain Centers must demonstrate expertise in:

  • Integrating the emergency department with the local emergency medical system
  • Assessing, diagnosing, and treating patients quickly
  • Effectively treating patients with low risk for acute coronary syndrome and no assignable cause for their symptoms
  • Continually seeking to improve processes and procedures
  • Ensuring Chest Pain Center personnel competency and training
  • Maintaining organizational structure and commitment
  • Having a functional design that promotes optimal patient care
  • Supporting community outreach programs that educate the public to promptly seek medical care if they display symptoms of a possible heart attack

“I had to come back and thank them,” she says. “I had to let them know that I’m alive and that I can spend time with my kids thanks to them.

“I wanted them to know that they really do save lives.”

Denise Negrete

‘They really do save lives.’

Denise Negrete is living proof of Baptist’s commitment to rapid, state-of-the-art care of heart attack patients.

The 26-year-old mother of three from Houston was visiting San Antonio last year when she suffered full cardiac arrest. Emergency medical services personnel began treatment and rushed Negrete to North Central Baptist Hospital where a team of dedicated doctors and nurses worked to save her life.

During Negrete’s heart attack, the Emergency Room staff at North Central Baptist employed cutting-edge hypothermia care that minimizes brain damage that can occur when the heart stops. The staff was able not only to save Negrete’s life, but to preserve her quality of life.

Negrete couldn’t help but cry tears of gratitude in December 2012 when she returned to San Antonio to visit the doctors and nurses at North Central who had treated her a few months earlier.
