Over the past years, Baptist Health System has evolved to implement a robust wellness program which includes nutritional components.  And as of 2013, Baptist Health System has begun to take additional steps to provide healthier nutritional options.  Our system is committed to helping its patients, visitors and employees get healthy and stay healthy by offering a variety of tasty, well-balanced food with the launch of BHealthy Café. You will now find a wide array of healthier snack and meal options located in each hospital BHealthy Café.

San Antonio Restaurants Coalition

Baptist Health System partnered with the San Antonio Healthy Restaurants Coalition to participate in ¡Por Vida! – a restaurant recognition program that helps consumers make healthier food choices.  Registered Dieticians from the ¡Por Vida! program have teamed up with our Baptist Health System Registered Dieticians to identify meal options that meet nutritional guidelines developed by the Healthy Restaurants Coalition. All approved meal options follow the strict ¡Por Vida! nutritional criteria where a meal cannot exceed 700 calories, 23 grams of fat, 8 grams of saturated fat, 0.5 grams of trans fat, 750 mg of sodium and no fried foods.

Our system is one of two hospital systems in San Antonio to adopt the ¡Por Vida! guidelines into our menu options. But Baptist Health System is the only hospital system to offer healthier menu options along with healthier snack options.

San Antonio Healthy Vending – A Healthy Choice To-Go

Baptist Health System has recently joined forces with the San Antonio Healthy Vending – the Health Collaborative and the San Antonio Metropolitan Health District who work together to strengthen San Antonio’s vending guidelines in response to increasing obesity and diabetes rates throughout the community. 

As of spring 2013, Baptist Health System has made updates to our vending snack options.  These snack updates will greatly benefit all to:

  • reduce levels of calories
  • reduce fat
  • reduce sugar and sodium
  • provide you with healthier options to prevent health concerns

The healthy menu criteria are based on the Dietary Guidelines for Americans which suggests a balanced diet consisting of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low fat dairy and lean protein. These guidelines recommend consuming a variety of nutrient dense foods with minimal saturated fats, trans-fats, cholesterol, sodium, and added sugars.
