Dry Needling Physical Therapy for Pain Relief

According to a report by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, 1 in 2 adults or an estimated 126 million Americans suffer from some sort of musculoskeletal condition that causes pain. Dry needling is a physical therapy technique that targets trigger points or knots in muscles to reduce pain.

“With dry needing there is no exchange of fluids” says Brittany Elliott, PT, DPT, a physical therapist with HealthLink rehabilitation in San Antonio, Texas. “The needles, similar in size to acupuncture needles, are positioned in a way that releases muscles that have become banded up due to injury, stress or overuse. We use electrical stimulation in dry needling as well. When the current passes through the needles, it causes muscles to relax and stimulates blood flow, which reduces pain and flushes out toxins that can build up when muscles become banded.”

Jeanne Conger has suffered from headaches and neck pain for years as the result of a car accident she was involved in with a drunk driver. Jeanne has seen significant improvement in her pain and increased range of motion since starting dry needling physical therapy at HealthLink.
