Orthopedic Advances Offered at Baptist Orthopedic Hospital

Jun 4, 2019
If you live with joint pain, you know how limiting it can be. Many people are hesitant to undergo joint replacement surgery, however innovations in this type of surgery are improving the experience for patients who suffer from knee and hip pain that limits their daily activities.

The Baptist Orthopedic Hospital on the campus of North Central Baptist Hospital in the Stone Oak area is now offering MAKOplasty to help patients conquer their pain. MAKOplasty uses digitally captured, 3-D modeling prior to surgery, which surgeons use to determine implant size, orientation and alignment, in most cases leading to more accurate placement and better outcomes.

For patients who only need partial-knee replacements, MAKOplasty allows surgeons to preserve healthy tissue and ligaments, removing only the diseased portions of the joint and resulting in a more natural feeling knee. In many cases MAKOplasty patients experience less pain during the first week after surgery than do patients who underwent manual surgery after two months. MAKOPlasty is also available for people who need total knee replacement.

“Baptist Orthopedic Hospital is working to deliver best in class technology, people, procedures, outcomes and research,” said Graham Reeve, President and COO of Baptist Health System. “The hospital was designed to surround patients with a hotel-like experience while delivering safe, high quality services and care that address the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries of the musculoskeletal system.” Some of the specialties offered by the hospital are:

  • Joint replacement and arthritis treatment
  • Sports medicine injuries
  • Arthroscopic surgery
  • Spine treatment
  • Care and surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hand, wrist, knee, foot and ankle
  • Industrial rehabilitation
  • Orthopedic urgent care
  • Hand and physical therapy
“With a sole focus on quality musculoskeletal care, the Baptist Orthopedic Hospital is able to investigate new technology and surgical techniques, provide specialized operating and treatment rooms, and advance the field of orthopedic research,” said orthopedic surgeon Sergio Viroslav, MD. “As an orthopedic surgeon, I've been excited to be involved in the development of this hospital, which will make San Antonio a destination for top quality orthopedic care and help to attract and develop more skilled orthopedic practitioners in the area.”
