U.S. News & World Report Names Baptist Health System as a Best Regional Hospital and High Performing in Five Categories

Baptist Health System has been recognized as a Best Regional Hospital for 2020-2021 by U.S. News & World Report. The report ranks the five Baptist hospitals: Baptist Medical Center, Mission Trail, Northeast Baptist, St. Luke’s Baptist, and North Central Baptist hospitals among the elite 13% that won “Best” honors.

Baptist earned “High Performing” ratings in five categories including heart failure, colon cancer surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), hip and knee replacement. The high performing ratings are in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average, as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. “High Performing” is the highest rating U.S. News awards for receiving the highest rating possible.

“Awards by independent bodies like US News validates the incredible work by physicians and staff on behalf of our patients that we see every day in our hospitals. This year has been especially challenging as we navigate through the novel coronavirus pandemic, but we strive to provide excellent care for all,” said Baptist Health System CEO Matt Stone. “We continue to invest in our ability to provide the highest level of care for San Antonio and the surrounding communities we serve.”

A Best Regional Hospital is a hospital that a) offers a full range of general medical and surgical services (as opposed to a specialty hospital) and b) either was nationally ranked in one of the 12 data-driven Best Hospitals specialties or had three or more ratings of high performing in the Best Hospitals procedures and conditions. In addition to the aforementioned eligibility criteria, this year a hospital must c) have at least two more high performing procedures/conditions than below average procedures/conditions in order to be a Best Regional Hospital. Nationwide, 563 hospitals were identified as Best Regional Hospitals, compared to 569 last year.

US News & World Report reviews data for “Baptist Medical Center”. All five Baptist Health System Hospitals are graded together since they share one license.
