Acute Care for the Elderly

Our goal is compassionate, high quality care designed for seniors. The ACE Unit is available to treat acute medical conditions ranging from stroke recovery to pain management. The unit implements the latest techniques in geriatric acute care, which are designed to reduce the risk of complications. Specialized treatment helps older adults regain and maintain good function and reduce their hospital stay.

Acute Care for the Elderly

The program focuses on:

  • Reducing risk of infection
  • Dietary needs
  • Maintaining skin integrity
  • Family involvement
  • Keeping patients mobile and engaged to maintain function

This means patients:

  • Spend less time in bed and more time walking and socializing
  • Are encouraged to keep up with as many daily activities as possible

The Team

The ACE Unit consists of a team of specialists that includes physicians, nurses, dieticians, therapists, social workers and pharmacists who are trained to care for the special needs of older adults. The team incorporates protocols for care and treatment that are specific to these patients.

Hospital Stays And The Elderly

A long hospital stay can present serious risks for seniors, including increased incidence of urinary tract infection, development of pressure sores, and functional decline. For this reason, the Acute Care for the Elderly (ACE) Unit provides age-specific care for older adults.
