The term neuroendovascular indicates a type of minimally invasive surgery that can be an effective approach for conditions that affect the brain and spinal cord.
What Are Neuroendovascular Disorders?
A person might need neuroendovascular surgery for the following disorders or conditions:
- Stroke
- Aneurysm
- Arteriovenous malformation
- Arteriovenous fistulas of the brain and spine
- Atherosclerosis
- Vascular disorders
Neuroendovascular Treatments and Procedures
Advancements in imaging of the brain can make it possible to detect neurological conditions that are candidates for neuroendovascular surgery. In a neuroendovascular treatment, the physician threads small catheters through arteries and veins to repair
lesions from inside the blood vessel. As with other minimally invasive treatments, the result can lead to shorter recovery times. Examples of neuroendovascular treatments include expanding the blood vessel to allow for flow with:
- Platinum coil
- Stent-assisted coiling
- Balloon remodeling
- Mechanical thrombectomy
- Carotid stent
- Cerebral angiogram
Other options include endovascular embolization where a glue-like substance is delivered into the blood vessel to stop abnormal blood flow.
Neuroendovascular procedures may also be used to diagnose conditions by delivering dyes or treatments to the brain, spinal cord or nerves, making it easier for doctors to see exact areas of impeded blood flow.

A dedicated stroke patient navigator provides support and education to patients and their loved ones on the stroke journey from the initial event through rehabilitation. Our nurse navigator
