About Kari Smith
Kari Smith, MD is a general surgeon with a particular interest in robotic-assisted, minimally invasive techniques. She specializes in hernia repairs, benign gallbladder disease surgery, breast surgery and the removal of benign soft tissue masses. Dr. Smith strives to provide her patients with the same quality of care she’d want for her own family. She takes a patient-centric approach, adjusting her techniques and recommendations based on each individual’s unique circumstances. On a personal note, Dr. Smith is a native Houstonian and avid fan of the Houston Astros, Texans and Rockets. She has played softball competitively for 12 years and loves animals, including her own rescue pets. Dr. Smith is fluent in English and Spanish. Dr. Smith is a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society and received the Glasgow-Rubin Citation for Academic Achievement, an award given to female students in the top 10% of their class. She also received distinction for Outstanding Academic Achievement in Neuroscience and Developmental Anatomy. However, out of all her accomplishments, Dr. Smith is most proud when she sees her patients feeling better and getting back to the things they love.

Meet with the MA at my appointment time. I described why I was there and the MA listened carefully and took notes. I was asked several questions and my responses were appropriately annotated.

Meeting with the doctor was detailed in nature. I stated my reason for being there, what I was experiencing physically, and my suspicion that one of my meds was causing the issue I was having. The doctor confirmed my suspicions that my condition was caused by a med I was taking and that, In the absence of taking the med, which I had already stopped taking, it would take a few months to resolve. The doctor recommended that I should inform my prescribing physician of what I was experiencing from the med and to ask for a substitute med, but one that is another family of meds so as to hopefully eliminate prolonging my current med-caused condition. I was very happy to meet with this doctor because they expressed a genuine concern for my condition. Thankfully my condition would not require surgery. I was invited to return to the office if certain symptoms became evident regarding my current condition.

This was an outstanding visit. Concern for me was evident during my in person check in, my meeting with the MA, and most importantly with the doctor. If you need a second opinion regarding the possibility of surgery for your condition, I highly recommend scheduling an appointment with Baptist Healthcare Systems, Stat-Surgical after consulting with your Primary Care Physician.

I felt so nervous about my first time having surgery but I was truly in the best hands with Dr. Kari Smith! Dr. Smith is highly skilled and I felt safe knowing she would be caring for me while at my most vulnerable (being under anesthesia). I feel like I've had a good recovery so far and I know that is largely in part due to Dr Smith's skill and care!

When I first called the office Patrick was very nice, patient and helpful. Jay, Olivia were also very nice, helpful and kind since I was a bit nervous. Dr. Smith was patient, understanding and listened to me as I told her my history of dealing with my gallbladder. She explained the pros & cons and was very encouraging that it was time to have this surgery. I felt at ease with her and left feeling I had found the right surgeon.
